In the heart of Barrow-in-Furness, this 45-acre oasis awaits discovery. A tranquil retreat, a playground for all ages, and a living testament to a century of history, this verdant expanse offers more than meets the eye, evolving with the times to meet the changing needs of its community.
Your journey begins amidst the cool shade of tree-lined avenues, the sun dappling through the foliage, creating a kaleidoscope of light and shadow on the path. The gentle lapping of waves from the shimmering lake beckons you closer, its surface reflecting the azure sky like
a polished mirror.
This tranquil haven was born in the early 1900s, when the renowned landscape architect Thomas Mawson envisioned a grand public park for the growing town. His design, a masterful blend of formal gardens, open spaces, and recreational facilities, was a vision of Eden in an industrial landscape.
Construction began in 1908, and the park gradually took shape over the following decades. Shelters, bowling greens, and a refreshment pavilion sprang up, their architectural details a testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Tennis courts once echoed with the thwack
of rackets, but now a whimsical crazy golf course occupies their space, the sound of putters clinking against balls replaced by the laughter of friendly competition.
The park’s crowning jewel, a majestic bandstand, was erected in the heart of the park. Imagine the echoes of music and laughter that once filled the air, as concerts and performances brought the community together in joyous celebration.
But the park’s tranquillity was shattered by the outbreak of the First World War. Many of the town’s young men marched off to battle, never to return. In their memory, a solemn war memorial was erected in the park in 1920. Touch the cool stone, etched with the names of the fallen, and feel the weight of history.
As the town grew, so did the park. In the 1920s, the boating lake was extended, and new features were added. Among them was a charming Pets Corner, where generations of children squealed with delight at the sight of mischievous donkeys, colourful parrots squawking greetings, elegant peacocks strutting their stuff, fluffy rabbits nibbling on carrots, and even a curious fox peering out from its den.
Though Pets Corner is now a fond memory, its legacy lives on in the hearts of those who experienced its magic. Breathe in the earthy scent of the soil where it once stood, and imagine the joyful chaos that once reigned. Today, Barrow Park stands as a testament to the vision of its creators, a cherished space that has adapted and evolved with the times. While some features may have changed, the park’s essence remains the same — a tranquil haven where generations have found joy, solace, and connection with nature.
