In the 1960s, Amphitrite Street in Walney was a bustling hub of activity, and amongst the shops stood Duggie Dale’s, a purveyor of frozen delights. Known for its wide variety of frozen foods (according to a piece in “The Mail”), the shop’s motto, “You want it – we have it”, perfectly captured their commitment to customer satisfaction. Imagine stepping into Duggie Dale’s and finding early versions of frozen pizzas, alongside frozen fruits and vegetables, perhaps even the beginnings of ready meals that would become so popular in the decades to come.
This little piece of history brings back memories of a time when local shops played a vital role in the community. Duggie Dale’s was likely a go-to spot for residents looking for convenient and delicious frozen food options. It’s easy to picture a friendly face behind the counter, ready with a smile and the latest frozen food innovations.
And it seems those memories are still vivid for some! Evelyn Corkill shared her recollections on the Furness Whisper Facebook page:
“Duggie Dales the shop that was open all hours. He literally sold everything. The shelves were stacked as high as they were wide. Narrow aisles leading to more stacks of merchandise. I remember Duggie sat in the little booth checkout area just behind the door. I remember the ice lollies he used to make. A definite favourite for me, and the bags of Rainbow Kali that turned your tongue the most weirdest of colours. I also remember purchasing a bag of Hedgehog Crisps. So many great memories from visiting this unique shop on Walney Island.”
Evelyn’s memories paint a wonderful picture of Duggie Dale’s – a treasure trove of goods with a dedicated owner at its helm. It’s fascinating to hear about the homemade ice lollies, Rainbow Kali, and Hedgehog Crisps!
