Carnival Memories In the days of yore, the Barrow-in-Furness Carnival did reign supreme, a merrymaking tradition for over a hundred years, bringing joy to generations of townsfolk. Summertime wasn't complete without the vibrant procession, a dazzling spectacle with floats grandly adorned that snaked through the streets, a kaleidoscope of colours against the backdrop of blue skies. Imagine the shimmering sequins on the costumes catching the summer sun, and children with wide eyes, gazing in awe at the towering floats passing by. The joyful cacophony of brass bands filled the air, along with the cheers and laughter of the crowd echoing through the streets. Alas, a pause befell the carnival betwixt 1958 and 1971, but the public's enthusiasm never waned, fuelled by memories of the sweet aroma of candy floss and the mouthwatering scent of burgers and hotdogs sizzling on the grills. It returned in triumph in 1971! The 1970s and 80s saw the carnival flourish once more, becoming a cornerstone of the Barrow community. The rhythmic beat of drums accompanied the dancers, and the freshly cut grass of the park where the festivities took place added to the festive atmosphere. While recent years might see a shift in its traditional form, the legacy of the Barrow-in-Furness Carnival endures brightly. Share Your Stories!
