In April 1806, a wedding at Barrow-in-Furness was dramatically interrupted when a sailor appeared just before the ceremony was to take place. Declaring the young woman to be his rightful partner, he persuaded her to leave with him immediately. The couple departed in haste to marry elsewhere, leaving the intended bridegroom deserted.
